An interpretation is an explanation in terms of a propositional attitude, such as belief. Belief is the attitude that a proposition, such as p, is true. Interpretation is not just about having a belief: it’s using it to explain things. The term “interpretation” is used for this purpose in philosophy. I show in my work that interpretation is the essence of irrationality because it confuses a thought or proposition with our attitude towards the thought, and then provides an explanation on the basis of what we cannot reason about: our emotional states.
