I developed LE by accounting for what makes translation successful. Translation is successful when we pair resources in different languages for isomorphic, genre, or disciplinary purposes. According to LE a thought is the set of expressions with a common disciplinary purpose.  One implication of this model of thought is that every thought/proposition is a mini debate, containing within its extension the full diversity of expressions with a common disciplinary purpose. This allows thought to be clearly distinguished from various propositional attitudes that define different sides of a debate.  Hence, it is a rational model of thought, which allows us to define thoughts in terms of their inferential properties in debates. Thoughts, according to LE, are relative to disciplines: philosophical thoughts are different than mathematical thoughts or the propositions of physics, for instance, as they specify different parameters for coordinating debate. Nothing in this account of thought entails that the relevant expressions must be human or linguistic. LE allows us to appreciate how non-human animals are persons, straightforwardly contributing to the diversity of the content of thought.
